Diane Mott Davidson’s Fatally Flaky
Those who read my general book review blog know that I am a fan of Diane Mott Davidson. Goldy Schultz is one of the best crafted mystery heroines of any current American mystery series. Even though she is responsible for solving some pretty fantastic mysteries, there is a good deal of realism in her character. She has a happy second marriage. We’ve watched her son grow from a troubled pre-teen torn between an abusive and manipulative dad and his mother, to a self-assured young man who is kind, helpful and smart. Each book is like a new week in Goldy’s life unfolding before us. We pick up each new book as if we’re just catching up with an old friend.
In “Fatally Flaky” we meet Goldy’s Godfather, Jack, who has recently moved to Aspen Meadows from New Jersey.
The catering theme revolves around preparing the fixings for a couple of wedding receptions. One of them is changed at the last minute from Goldy’s own event center to a New Age spa in Aspen Meadows run by a temperamental and judgmental boss who has never liked Goldy.
Goldy and her Godfather have to solve the mystery of who has killed his best friend, Doc Finn, and, eventually also a guest from the spa. Goldy and Jack have to be careful not to be next on the hit list.
As usual, Davidson has planted almost as many murder suspects as characters in the book, and there are enough twists and turns in the plot to satisfy all Goldy Schultz mystery lovers.
