Indivisible? by Paul Martin Midden

“Kirkus” calls “Indivisible?” the novel by Paul Martin Midden that came out this May, “deeply disturbing.”  I discovered why on the very first page of Part 1:  The body of our current president, Barack Obama,  is found in a pool of blood in the Capitol Building and Vice President Biden is attacked at the White House.  This could be a scene from the new movie, “White House Down” except that the author actually names the victims as if this is happening in reality to our current POTUS, Vice POTUS, our Chief Justis, and other top officials.

The present-day story goes back and forth with events that happened during and after the American Civil War (1861-65) to the Confederate Bellamy family and how their progeny, Abner Bellamy, tries to carry out the mission of his secessionist ancestors in present-day America.  The book begs the question of whether the U.S. is ripe for another American civil war.

I decided not to read more than the first couple chapters of this book because I found the scenes of violent death of our sitting president and the attacks on other members of our nation’s leadership too nauseating to be able to go on.  Had the book been cast as a complete work of fiction I probably could have continued, but as it is written it gives reason to egg on both foreign and domestic terrorists, and that is not something I can condone by giving this book my time and attention.

Although I firmly believe in the right of this author to his opinions and to write and speculate freely, I view this book as akin to shouting “fire” in a crowded theater.  Therefore it is resoundingly not recommended because it is so graphic and divisive as to be incendiary.
